Typically, most of these precious children’s wishes fall under one of the following four categories:

  • I wish to be …. e.g. a princess, a flight attendant, a fireman
  • I wish to go …. e.g. swim with dolphins, to the beach, to Universal Studios
  • I wish to meet …. e.g. DJ Zinhle, Gareth Cliff, Minni Dlamini, Black Coffee
  • I wish to have …. e.g. a musical instrument, a laptop, a makeover of my bedroom

  1. Referral

We accept referrals from medical professionals (doctors, nurses, social workers) or parents of the children.

  1. Eligibility

Wish children must be between the ages of 3 to 18 at the time of the referral.

The child must have been diagnosed with a life-threatening medical condition (i.e. a progressive, degenerative or malignant condition that has placed the child’s life in jeopardy). The child’s presiding physician will determine if the child is medically eligible for the wish by completing a Medical Eligibility Form.

The child must be a resident in South Africa to qualify for the wish and must not have received a wish from another wish organisation.

We grant wishes to eligible children without regard of race, religion, gender or economic status.

  1. The Wish

Once we determine the child’s eligibility, an enthusiastic team of volunteers will sit down with the child to get to know his or her heartfelt wish. This dedicated team connects with the child and asks questions to be able to envision the magical experience that will have the power to make a difference in the life of the child.

  1. Creating a Magical Experience

Wish Upon a Star South Africa, through its volunteer network, creates a magical and life-changing experience for the child and their family. Each wish is personalised to match the child’s wish idea of a perfect day, as visualised by the child during his or her meeting with our volunteers.
